Live Inspired! Words about Heels

February 25, 2010 · 2 Comments

It is surprising to me the times when I read an incredible quote that summarizes exactly how I feel at that moment. I like to think I can put my emotions into words, but sometimes it is just impossible. Other times, quotes are just a fun way to break up the workday. I have gathered some quotes on my favorite subject; which is unsurprisingly high heels. Some are funny or sweet or empowering. Hopefully this breaks the monotony of today that the snow and the end of the week may have caused.

Enjoy and live inspired.

Not diamonds, but heels are a girl’s best friend.
William Rossi, Footwear Expert

A pair of new shoes might not cure a broken heart or soothe a tension headache, but they will relieve the symptoms.
Holly Brubach, Fashion Critic

High heels are pride and privilege, the passkey to decadence.
Karen Heller, Journalist

Shoes, like buildings, have a mysterious chemistry of proportion.
Suzanne Slesin, Journalist

A cause may be inconvenient, but it’s magnificent. It’s like champagne or high heels, and one must be prepared to suffer for it.
Arnold Bennett

You may not be able to wear your favorite pair of pants if you gain a few pounds, but you can always wear your favorite pair of shoes.
Sara Vass, Shoe Collector

To be carried by shoes, winged by them. To wear dreams on one’s feet is to begin to give reality to one’s dreams.
Roger Vivier

You put high heels on and you change.
Monolo Blahnik

The history of footwear is one of endless conceits and fantasies.
Colin McDowell, Fashion Writer

If you want to fall in love with a shoe, go ahead. There are so many nice looking ones.
Allan Sherman, Musician

I look at stilettos more as an attitude as opposed to a high-heeled shoe.
Lita Ford, Rock Singer

The fact is, sometimes it’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun.
-Carrie Bradshaw

Nothing has been invented yet that will do a better hob than heels at making a good pair of legs look great, or great ones look fabulous.

Live Inspired: Failure and Imagination

February 19, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Live Inspired is a new series on Three Inch Heel. The postings will include pieces of our culture that inspire me, question my path, and remind me to live inspired. I hope they do the same for you.

As young women, we must look to those females before us for inspiration and wisdom. This is not a new concept, but as young people we sometimes forget to listen. As JK Rowling describes at Harvard Commencement, young people are on the brink of “real life” and are so afraid of failure. But it is the failure and our imagination that save us from ourselves and from what we think we want. Enjoy and live inspired.

Nail Appropriate

February 9, 2010 · 5 Comments

It’s super easy to change from professional day to a night out. We have read a million articles about ditching the blazer, stuffing a cute little metallic clutch with the essentials, and switching out day jewels for major sparkles. But what about your nails? It isn’t easy going from super professional to fun – coworkers generally frown on the smell and well, the inappropriateness of changing polish at the office. I for one LOVE snazzy nails. It contributes to my fun nature, but proper nail etiquette is essential. Some new trends are disappointing and honestly, detract from the professional intelligent women we are. I refuse to be boring, but insist class.

1. Chipping polish is NOT a trend. I was reading OK (not my best moment I know, but it was in the salon and Vogue was no where to be found) and Brittany Spears consistently had chipping nail polish in the photos and the mag said it was a new trend. This trend should go in the direction of the shoulder pad, obsolete.

2. Super long fake (or even not fake) nails are scary. The rule is – keep them short enough so that your fingers are typing and not your nails. Do you want to scare people away with your claws? No way.

3. Decals or painted animals on your nails do not express your personality, they express your manicurist’s. There is no need for full landscapes on your nails. Some designs, however, aren’t, for lack of a better word, tacky and we’ll get to those shortly.

Don’t get me wrong. I am all for being fun and funky, but it needs a little sophistication. Nails are an accessory and should follow the same rules other work accessories follow – a lot in moderation or a little with a lot of personality. Think about length, color, and design. If one is a little too much, the others should be a little less. Here are some good examples of what I mean.

We saw trends in neon and gem shades, but we are moving more the matte neutrals. It isn’t for everyone, but could be used as the tip of a manicure or gorgeous shade for a bright outfit.
A standard manicure with a touch of spring. If nail art is your thing, keep it simple. One nail on each hand does the trick.
Switch up that manicure. Almost any color works as a tip and neutrals are great as the base with a standard white tip.

Now, here are some bad examples of professional nails.

In short, keep them simple, manicured, and classy.

Brands to love.

RGB. Classic colors that steer clear from boring.
Chanel. Of course, fashionable clothes, fashionable (and durable) polish.
MAC. Best for neutral or dark shades with a kick.
Seche Vite. Best Dry Fast Top Coat EVER.

November 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

For some reason, my motivation has been a little off lately. Maybe it’s moving into my new condo, the rainy/black weather, being sick, but generally I can be hit with a crazy amount of stress and be a little energizer nelly. I’m choosing to ignore the source and get to the solution! What can I Keep reading →

Personal Logo

November 2, 2009 · 7 Comments

In the past 6 months, I believe I have attended 3 events with the main topic being personal branding. (One of them is recapped in a previous blog post “I Accidentally Wore Flats to ‘Networking in Stilettos.’”)

Because of our personalities, we all brand ourselves in some way. We define who we are naturally by how we hope others will identify us. Personal branding is intentionally defining the person we want others to experience when they hear our name or see our picture.

I’m still working on my intentional messaging, but have accomplished my first step in establishing a personal brand – a logo.

this one copyWhat do you think? Would love some feedback.

Send me your personal logo! I want examples to inspire others. Here’s what I have received so far.

Article: The Female Economy

October 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I attended Temple University’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference this morning and heard a striking statistic. US law schools are seeing 50% of their classes consisting women, but female partners at law firms is at only 19%. This is most likely due to the time-lapse of graduating classes. I am more interested to observe if that 19% will change and, if so, how quickly. This article is just a quick snippet of women’s influence in these economic times. Enjoy.

Nell

Article by Michael J. Silverstein and Kate Sayre from the Harvard Business Review.

As a market, women represent a bigger opportunity than China and India combined. So why are companies doing such a poor job of serving them?

Women now drive the world economy.

Globally, they control about $20 trillion in annual consumer spending, and that figure could climb as high as $28 trillion in the next five years. Their $13 trillion in total yearly earnings could reach $18 trillion in the same period. In aggregate, women represent a growth market bigger than Keep reading →

New Link: a.placebetween.us Solves a HUGE Problem!

May 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I was in a rut. Choosing city spots to meet clients for coffee or lunch generallya.placebetween.usconsisted of me frequenting the same places that are (inconvenient for them) close to my office. No longer! A.placebetween.us totally solves the “where should we meet issue” by suggesting places in between addresses AND it works anywhere in the US. Here’s the deal.

  1. Input your address.
  2. Input your client/friend’s address.
  3. Choose the category ie coffee, pizza, shopping, etc.
  4. Through google maps, choose the place that sounds good for you.

So simple, yet soooo useful. Hopefully, this makes clients meetings a little easier for the girl on the go. Find it in the links on the right side under “business” or “young professional.”

Happy Networking.
