For some reason, my motivation has been a little off lately. Maybe it’s moving into my new condo, the rainy/black weather, being sick, but generally I can be hit with a crazy amount of stress and be a little energizer nelly. I’m choosing to ignore the source and get to the solution! What can I (more…)

Article: The Female Economy
October 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I attended Temple University’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference this morning and heard a striking statistic. US law schools are seeing 50% of their classes consisting women, but female partners at law firms is at only 19%. This is most likely due to the time-lapse of graduating classes. I am more interested to observe if that 19% will change and, if so, how quickly. This article is just a quick snippet of women’s influence in these economic times. Enjoy.

Article by Michael J. Silverstein and Kate Sayre from the Harvard Business Review.
As a market, women represent a bigger opportunity than China and India combined. So why are companies doing such a poor job of serving them?
Women now drive the world economy.
Globally, they control about $20 trillion in annual consumer spending, and that figure could climb as high as $28 trillion in the next five years. Their $13 trillion in total yearly earnings could reach $18 trillion in the same period. In aggregate, women represent a growth market bigger than (more…)

New Link: a.placebetween.us Solves a HUGE Problem!
May 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment
I was in a rut. Choosing city spots to meet clients for coffee or lunch generally
consisted of me frequenting the same places that are (inconvenient for them) close to my office. No longer! A.placebetween.us totally solves the “where should we meet issue” by suggesting places in between addresses AND it works anywhere in the US. Here’s the deal.
- Input your address.
- Input your client/friend’s address.
- Choose the category ie coffee, pizza, shopping, etc.
- Through google maps, choose the place that sounds good for you.
So simple, yet soooo useful. Hopefully, this makes clients meetings a little easier for the girl on the go. Find it in the links on the right side under “business” or “young professional.”
Happy Networking.

I Accidentally Wore Flats to “Networking in Stilettos”
May 11, 2009 · 2 Comments
When Neen James said the word “TeleCoffee,” I thought, what have I gotten myself into? Is this going to be another event that I go home feeling like I would have been more inspired by the Biggest Loser than the lessons of the event?
No! This small, spunky, bling-a-riffic Aussie won me over by the end of the evening. Whether you are in the corporate world or own your own business, networking is an essential skill for every business woman. Mrs. James shares how to “Network in Stilettos” at any stage of a career. As a successful speaker and author, she shared with the Ladies Who Launch group tips from business card etiquette to proper conversational flow.
The best and most eye opening tip was the telecoffee. A telecoffee is when two people grab a coffee at their desk and talk on the telephone (she said it as a (more…)

Inspiration and Chocolate. Does it get much better?
April 16, 2009 · 1 Comment
Chocolate was EVERYWHERE. I mean the good kind like chocolate covered strawberries and dark chocolate with macadamia nuts. Surprisingly this was not the best part of the Ladies Who Launch LINC Up! Monthly Inspirational Networking Meeting at Naked Chocolate on April 15th. The meeting opened with introductions and positivity filled the room. These women of all ages and stages set the tone for the night from the beginning, share and share freely.
Tom Block, co-owner of Naked Chocolate, spoke a bit of the challenges and joys of working with his 27 year old daughter, trained in forensic anthropology and unfortunately for us at the Fleetwood Mac concert last night. He is a true entrepreneur with a kind heart, gut feelings, and unwavering optimism. His dry and awkward sense of humor was endearing as he explained starting another business at an age where he should be thinking about timeshares in Florida.
Next came interaction. We were split into small groups and each person expressed something that was a challenge for them. One young mature (and pregnant) business owner expressed her anxiety about owning her own business with a new baby on the way. The group suggested a virtual assistant, (more…)

Quick One
March 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment
There is one word that scares me more than anything right now. Balance. Not physically. I actually think my center of gravity is surprisingly good. I mean in life. Isn’t it the key to happiness and yoga-like serenity? I keep adding new “adult” situations to my professional and personal life and find that if I don’t add them, they are just popping up out of nowhere. The
stakes seem to get higher too. Jobs with products that depend solely on me to be profitable or relationships that need more emotional support than I think I can give.
This balance I guess is a process. Finding it is growing up. Seems I have a bit of Peter Pan syndrome, but even he found a way to play with friends, fight a crocodile, and have a girlfriend.

Dessert and the Business Lunch: Your Secret Weapon
February 20, 2009 · 3 Comments

Too Good To Pass Up
For a young professional, I have been to my fair share of business lunches. They are my favorite business/sales tools. Personal sales and marketing are coming back into vogue, from handwritten notes to the invigorating business lunch. Lunch is a bit like a first date actually. Some awkwardness in the beginning, great or sometimes horrendous conversation and the opportunity to develop a long term relationship. Luckily, you can have 3 or 4 in a week and seem like a champ instead of a, well, you know what I mean.
I was out with a few of my mentors for a little Japanese last week and after the meal was over, the server asked us about dessert. I stated no, because I thought dessert for business lunches was off limits. Maybe because I don’t want professional colleagues to see me eating less than healthy sweets or I am uncomfortable spending the money. For whatever reason, I don’t think I am the only one who feels this way.
Because I am close to these women and they won’t look at my like I have 5 heads, I asked if it was appropriate to order dessert during a business lunch. Absolutely! was the resounding answer. Totally surprised, I got the low down on the etiquette. Thank god. I love guidelines.
- If it is a table of men and you, expect they will defer to you to decide if dessert will be ordered.
- Ask to see the menu.
- Be confident when asking to see the menu. No wimpy whispers. You are the only one judging yourself.
- If you feel like ordering, order. If not, don’t.
- Sharing is inappropriate.
- Lastly, if you decide not to order dessert and someone at the table does, sip on a coffee or tea.
Now we know how to handle the situation, why would you order dessert (other than the fact that the rice pudding is world famous)?
- The extra course extends the meeting and allows more time to get to build relationships.
- If the client has more questions, it allows more time to answer them.
- You are showing you have devoted a large amount of time to them and the lunch meeting. Time = Importance
- You are taking control, showing confidence.
- Sometimes the desserts are just too good to pass up.
I, as a business women, need to strip myself of that Judgy McJugerton inside. The only person that loses is me. Hope this helps for your next business lunch. Good luck and have some cheesecake on me!

London: My Cultural Redbull
February 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment
So I quit my job. Before you think I am totally crazy, I do have a job lined up. A great one actually. Everyone assumes that I did it for the money. Well, to the disappointment of my tiny bank account, it is a modest amount more. Nothing to go on a shopping spree for. Money is not the reason I am venturing out on this new career. I would hope for most people, especially starting out as young professionals, it is about professional growth and new opportunity. This is a side note though. Just news What I want to talk about is inspiration.
The bottom line is I need inspiration before I start my new position. I had become bored and this wasn’t anyone’s fault but my own. This new position is lifting my heavy eyelids and I needed a Redbull to really kick it into gear. My chosen adrenaline is London. A quick trip to clear my mind and change the state of myself, and frankly see great contemporary art. I am taking a week off in between the old life and the new to breath different, new air.
I write to you from my college friend’s tiny flat in Bayswater London. So lucky I could mooch off of him for a bit. He was a little surprised when I Facebooked him a week ago asking if I could crash. Happy and a little confused I was welcomed with open arms. London is a city full of snobby, lovable, cultured Brits and lots of inspiration. I am looking for my clean slate at Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, and alike. No groundbreaking epiphanies, just a different perspective. The pastries aren’t bad either.
When work gets a little too predictable (ham and cheese AGAIN for lunch?) where do you go for inspiration? What do you do? For me, I can’t be running off to London every 6 months to serve as my cultural
Redbull. I am learning it is little steps along the way that stave off the depression of the uninspired. A new restaurant every week or maybe a new fun activity like paint on pottery (yes, it’s cool) or seeing a new band at a hipster coffeehouse will help. I need to find something. Plane tickets are expensive!
I believe inspiration comes when we challenge the aesthetic our brain sees and processes everyday. This isn’t a groundbreaking thought, BUT how many times do we seek out these challenges in our everyday lives? One tip, it’s not at Wawa or 7/11. I’ve tried. Mission: Be inspired this week. Wherever it comes from, find your cultural Redbull.
